President Kenyatta to meet new leader of S.A. ruling party; address ANC fete
EAST LONDON, South Africa, 12th January 2018, (PSCU)—President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in the South African industrial town of East London today for talks with new ANC leader Cyril Ramaphosa, and an address to the ruling party’s birthday congress.
President Kenyatta will use the meeting at his villa to congratulate Mr Ramaphosa for winning a tight race for the leadership of the African National Congress (ANC) presidency, and appraise him of key bilateral issues, including immigration.
On Saturday, President Kenyatta will be the keynote speaker at the 106th anniversary celebrations that will be held at the Buffalo Stadium, here in East London.
The President will speak on issues of Pan Africanism, the role of political parties in promoting African democracy, unity, and self-reliance in a highly anticipated address.
The President’s official visit started on Thursday in Durban where he held talks with South Africa President Jacob Zuma. The two leaders said the visit would lead to greater cooperation between the two countries’ ruling parties, Jubilee and ANC.
“I am happy to participate in the ANC birthday celebrations. We want to see how political parties in Africa can cooperate,” said President Kenyatta.
Speaking to the media after the talks, Presidents Kenyatta and Zuma also said the relations between the two countries would be taken to “a new level”.
They identified trade and infrastructure as the pillars that would get more emphasis in the relationship between Kenya and South Africa.
Other dignitaries expected at the Saturday function include former Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano and political party leaders from the Southern Africa region countries.
The new leaders of the ANC who were elected last month have been holding various activities in the lead up to the Saturday celebrations.
