Joho’s gets rousing welcome after surprise chopper landing in Siaya
Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho on Monday received an enthusiastic welcome when he made an unexpected landing in Bondo and Siaya, opposition Chief Raila Odinga’s hometowns.
Joho landed shortly after Siaya Senator James Orengo had presented his nomination papers to IEBC Siaya County officials to formally launch his re-election bid.
Governor 001, as he is popularly referred to, had flown to Siaya to join Mr Orengo at a rally in the county where Raila and the opposition enjoy a huge following.
The Mombasa County chief is among opposition leaders close to Raila and is expected to play a primary role in campaigning for his fourth presidential bid and National Super Alliance (NASA) aspirants in Coast region ahead of the August 8 general election.
He has also indicated he will contest for the presidency in 2022 to challenge one of his political rivals, deputy president William Ruto.
A huge crowd surged towards Joho’s chopper as residents scrambled to shake hands with the man who has been one of Jubilee’s main critique since President Uhuru Kenyatta took over power in 2013.
As simple as he always is- donned in a T-shirt and pair of jeans- Joho took time to acknowledge greetings from residents who were chanting slogans in his praise.
Some of the residents told the former Kisauni MP and ODM life member to frequently visit the county. They told him Siaya was his second home after Mombasa.
He was received by Orengo before the two including Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga and other senior opposition leaders in the county addressed rallies in Siaya and Bondo towns where he told-off Uhuru’s administration over what he termed its poor development record.
“They claim to have constructed the Standard Gauge Railway line. But my question is one; was it necessary to inflate its cost by Sh100 billion?” he asked to the crowd’s applause.
