KDF rescues PS abducted by suspected Al Shabaab
Public Works Principal Secretary Mariam El-Maawy who was among six people abducted by suspected Al Shabaab fighters in Lamu on Thursday has been rescued.
Five other people who had been taken hostage alongside the PS were also rescued.
The PS and her staff were hijacked at Milihoi along the busy Lamu-Mpeketoni highway after attending a Lapsset event.
The PS was rescued by KDF soldiers presently carrying out patrols in the area the Star reported Thursday.
The PS was reported to be “slightly injured and in shock” by the time KDF officers rescued them.
She was in Lamu for a consultation meeting with stakeholders.
The vehicle she was traveling in was cruising towards Witu when they were ambushed by the suspected Al Shabaab fighters.
KDF officers are currently deployed at Boni forest in Lamu to pursue the fighters with their base in Somalia.
