Middle aged man killed for allegedly raping granny
A 30-year- old man was on Friday killed by the public for allegedly raping of an 85-year old woman at Thengeini village in Murang’a County.
Gathaiya Thuo was cornered by irate residents in a quarry where he was hiding and stoned to death.
The deceased was accused of raping the granny on Thursday night leaving her lying unconscious in her one-roomed house.
The residents suspected that Thuo had committed the crime after they allegedly spotted his footprints in the compound of the granny.
After regaining consciousness, the granny narrated her ordeal but could not identify the person who had committed the heinous act.
A resident who sought anonymity claimed Thuo had been arrested severally for cases of rape and had two pending cases on rape before a Murang’a court.
“Only when the deceased is out of jail is when we experience such crimes and people of this area were tired with his criminal acts,” posed one of the residents.
The area assistant Chief John Ngiri said residents had complained about the deceased’s conduct but efforts to address the issue had been futile as he had refused to honor his summons.
Ngiri condemned the mob justice saying residents should have arrested and handed him over to the police.
At the house of the victim, Ngiri said they found two rolls of bhang and a jacket believed to belong to the deceased.
“In the morning the son of the granny visited her only to find her mother lying on her bed unconscious. The son alerted the residents who embarked on a search for the accused,” added the assistant chief.
Murang’a East OCPD Mr. Johnstone Limo warned the public against taking the law into their own hands.
OCPD said although the suspect was a wanted person, the public should have handed him over to the nearby Muchungucha police post instead of lynching him.
The grandmother was rushed to Murang’a County Hospital where she is recuperating as the body of Thuo taken to Murang’a hospital mortuary.
