MPs urged to support establishment constituency innovative hubs
Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Cabinet Secretary, Joe Mucheru, today challenged the youth to be ambassadors of change and reach out to their respective Members of Parliament (MPs) to facilitate the setting up of Constituency Innovative Hubs (CIH) in partnership with his Ministry.
Mucheru said that MPs have been slow in embracing the Ministry’s initiative of providing four hubs in each of the 290 constituencies to enhance online work under the government’s flagship of Ajira Digital programme.
In a speech read on his behalf by Information Secretary, Judy Munyinyi Mumo, at Tom Mboya Labour College during a youth training on online work, the CS said the internet connectivity challenge will be solved if the target is achieved hence save the online workers from the burden of purchasing costly internet bundles.
Mucheru also announced Government’s plans to offload some of her work onto online platforms so that it can be accessed, completed and submitted by the youth as part of creating job opportunities. He assured the youth of the credibility and authenticity of online work assuring them that the jobs are credible, descent and prestigious, the same way the highly rated white collar jobs are.
“The active involvement of the government to encourage you to take up online work is a surety that the work is genuine,” he emphasised.
“The jobs have capacity to culminate into a big growth of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) besides also bridging the gap of the dwindled jobs in the formal employment sector,” he added.
The Ajira Digital Programme is being implemented by the Ministry of ICT in partnership with the Ministries of Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs, Education, Foreign Affairs and partners in the civil society and private sector. It intends to bridge the gap between skills demand and lack of jobs.
“The objective of the government is to ensure that through this program, we enable over 1 million young people to find and earn a decent wage from online employment,” said the CS.
