Some 15,000 youth will be recruited to the National Youth Service in exercise that starts in July.

Speaking on Sunday when she presented cheques to women groups, Youth and Gender Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki said the recruits will be increased from 4,000.

NYS was rocked with scandal, leading to resignation of former CS Anne Waiguru. Parliament has already recommended that Waiguru be barred from holding any public office, although the Kirinyaga gubernatorial candidate has moved to court to quash the report.

Some 11 people including Kago, Ben Gethi, Josephine Kabura, have been charged with the loss of Sh791 million the agency. Parliament Accounts Committee also accused Mutahi Ngunyi through his firm- Consulting House firm of engaging the NYS in a Sh90 million irregular contract.

The Committee said Ngunyi’s firm was paid millions for reproducing an existing document, with only minor adjustments.

But on Sunday, Kariuki said the youth would participate in various government interventions aimed at alleviating poverty, and urged residents to apply when the recruitment starts.

The CS also urged the youth to apply for money from the Youth Enterprise Fund. She complained that young people, especially in Elbu, were no longer applying for the money.

I have various cheques for women groups but I have none for the youth here. The money is there but no one is applying.
