Police in Mombasa have come in to end fears of showdown that was expected to take place in the region following parallel rallies planned by both the Jubilee and ODM.

County Commander Peter Maelo said they had not been notified of the meeting which was to be held at Mvita grounds.

According to Maelo, the Jubilee team in Mombasa led by Suleiman Shahbal sent late notification.

Police finally cancelled the Sunday parallel rally planned by Jubilee.

“”We cannot allow Jubilee to hold a meeting on Sunday at Mvita. We are only aware of the ODM rally. Any other gathering will be treated as illegal,” Maelo said.

ODM rally in Tononoka grounds is seen as move by the Mombasa governor and the opposition to stamp their control of the vote rich region.

Maelo assured ODM leaders of adequate security during the rally.

ODM leader Raila Odinga has landed in the coastal town ready to inspect projects commissioned by Joho.

The Jubilee party led by William Ruto is however expected to have a rally in Malindi tomorrow.

Last week in Kwale and Kinango the Orange Party rally was cancelled when GSU officers lobbed tear gas canisters and shot in the air to clear the supporters, saying the venue had been booked for a public baraza.

Another meeting that was to take place at Lunga Lunga was called off following the fracas.
