Principal detained over defilement
A Malindi court has ordered a secondary school principal to be detained for seven days to pave way for further investigations after being suspected to have defiled a school girl.
Area Chief Magistrate Dr. Julie Oseko ordered police to detain the Principal of Ganda Secondary School, AthmanMaro Ade, at the Malindi Police station.
The Investigation Officer, Corporal Marian Hussein told the Court that the suspect lured the girl while on her way home and spent a night with her in Watamu.
“On that day, the teacher told the girl to remain behind after school and later carried her on his motor bike to Watamu for the night where he allegedly defiled her,” she said.
Corporal Hussein told the Court that more time was needed to complete investigation since some witnesses had not recorded their statements and some crucial evidence to support the case was pending.
“We also need to take his mobile phone to Cybercrime Unit for investigation to establish whether it was true the parents of the girl called him while at Watamu,” she said.
The Corporal said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday night and the girl was taken to Malindi Sub-county hospital where tests conducted revealed she was defiled.
But the suspect through lawyer Richard Otara opposed the application to be remanded, saying he is ready to cooperate with police.
“He has a constitutional right to bail since the offence is bailable and the suspect has not been charged with the offence,” he added.
The Magistrate ordered the suspect be remanded until the mention of the case on July 21, 2017.
