Security agencies ready to tackle election violence
Security personnel in Nyanza region have announced readiness to tackle election related violence ahead of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party primaries in the region.
The Nyanza regional police commandant Willy Lugusa said they will deploy additional security in areas perceived as hostile to tame violence that characterizes ODM primaries in the region in each electioneering period.
“We have plans to deploy additional security in the region to ensure that the nomination process in the region is devoid of violence,” said Mr. Lugusa.
Mr. Lugusa said the security team will meet aspirants and party election board officials in
counties within the region ahead of nominations.
“Police are ready to ensure residents of this region are accorded the peace they want. Politics should be done in a manner that does not interfere with other people’s peace,” Mr. Lugusa added.
The police boss further asked politicians to act with decorum during party nominations, saying stern measures will be taken against those involved in criminal related activities.
“Political activities should not be aimed at breaching peace and whoever will be found doing contrary should prepare to face the law,” he said.
The officer said this yesterday after he met security personnel and area ODM election board officials in Homa Bay Town.
Also present during the meeting were commanders John Omusanga (police), Michael Mutonyi (AP) and the county ODM electoral board chairman Tom Cheriga.
On his part Mr. Cheriga assured ODM members and supporters of credible nominations.
He said they are working independently, adding that they do not take sides in the nominations.
“The board officials are ready to discharge their mandate effectively without biasness. I assure participants that the exercise will be free, fair and credible,” Mr. Cheriga said.
Mr. Cheriga urged supporters to turn up in large numbers and elect candidates of their choice during the party primaries.
“We’re not going to tolerate election officials who take sides in the nominations,” he said.
Nyanza is a stronghold of ODM and the party expects to conduct its nominations in the counties from next week.
The counties include Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Kisumu and Siaya.
