Supporters of Governor Hassan Joho and Nyali MP Hezron Awiti clashed on Tuesday as the two flexed political muscles ahead of the August election.

Hell broke lose when Awiti and his supporters stormed Tononoka Hall where Joho was holding a meeting with members of the Luo community living in Mombasa.

A video shot at the scene shows youth exchanging blows and hitting opponents with plastic chairs.

Awiti is challenging Joho in the race for the county top seat and has consistently accused Joho of mismanaging county resources.

In June, Awiti accused Joho of instructing outdoor advertising companies not to erect his campaign billboards in Mombasa.

The two politicians who were elected on opposition party tickets in 2013 were close allies until 2015 when Awiti declared interest for the gubernatorial seat.
